Occasionally †(of a thing): able to be known or proved ( obsolete )", Late Middle English; earliest use found in Geoffrey Chaucer (c1340–1400), poet and administrator. From acquaint + -able, originally after Middle French acointable, accointable (of a person) easy to be acquainted with, affable, amiable.
